Triq l-Ifran — Bakery Street — runs the length of Valletta and is, by the standards of a capital, silent. The house is seventeenth century and the flat is the piano nobile, the grand first floor that Maltese houses give over to the principal rooms.
Four-metre ceilings, and a gallarija — the closed timber balcony — painted the green the city has used for two hundred years.
Eleven days. The client had looked for fourteen months on her own before engaging us, which is not a criticism of her: the flat was never advertised.
